For the first time, Holy Island on Lough Derg will be wholly owned by the state in a deal being announced by the local authority this morning.

In all, nearly €600,000 is being spent on acquiring 41 acres of land and also on developing a Visitor Management and Tourism Development Plan which will provide a framework to attract visitors to the East Clare.

Ruins and buildings still standing on Holy Island date back as far as the 7th century, and the site is on the UNESCO world heritage site tentative list for Ireland.
