Sherlock lost out 9-6 to Hugh Nevin (Cavan) , a brother of Olympic Flyweight contender John Joe over three rounds of savage intensity where fortunes fluctuated throughout. The Ennis fighter got off to a great start and dictated terms with accurate left handers to lead 2-0 at the bell . He kept Nevin at bay with his southpaw right handers through the second and lead 5-4 going into the final round , but Nevin’s quest for a fifth Irish title was not to be undone and he forced Sherlock to take a standing count midway through the round. Sherlock rallied , but the Cavan boxers relentless pressure prevailed and he won on a 9-6 margin .

It was a powerful battle throughout and both fighters got a standing ovation at the final bell . Disappointment for the seventeen-year-old Ennis fighter , but he will take some time out from the sport for now to concentrate on his Leaving Certificate exams , and will return with a possible International vest as his destiny.
